Intercultural Communication | Importance Of Intercultural Communication

Intercultural Communication, simply put is communication between cultures. We can define Culture as, “ongoing negotiation of learned and patterned beliefs, attitudes values and behaviors,” and that comes from the textbook from the University of Minnesota libraries. So remember back to perception and even defining communication when we discuss that we interpret messages based on our experiences? Culture is one of those lenses.

Culture drives our perceptions and interpretations of the world and also the decisions that we make, what we believe, why we believe it, and how we act. Culture is learned. These are the beliefs and attitudes that I picked up as a result of my upbringing. This is actually a really powerful idea if you think about it. It’s our job as parents and members of society to teach and integrate our children into cultural values. So we hold the power to influence our children’s attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and values as we teach them these types of things.Intercultural Communication

The key to learning about intercultural communication is really being aware and respectful of cultural differences. A common tendency is to engage in Ethnocentrism or the belief that our culture is better than others or that thought that other cultures just don’t get it. We sometimes look at other cultures’ beliefs, values, attitudes, or behaviors negatively just because they’re different. Now we live in a global society, so it’s likely in your career you’ll be working with a very diverse group of co-workers, customers patients, etc…

Understanding how their culture drives their behaviors and decisions is really the key to successful business meetings, perhaps sales, and relationships that we make with others in the workplace. So let’s take a look at some of the most common cultural values that drive these attitudes behaviors beliefs etc… Specifically, we’re going to look at Hofstede’s five dimensions of culture. Now, each of these values is on a continuum and the cultures and countries will vary on that continuum. It’s really important to note that these are cultural values, and while the values are learned and passed down that doesn’t mean everyone in the culture always behaves consistently with that value.

Cultural values are very macro level, but they don’t describe individual differences. I’ll explain that more in-depth in just a few minutes. The first is Identity. The continuum of identity is from individualist – collectivist. Collectivist cultures value the good of the group or even society over individual achievements. So in business making decisions, someone from a collectivist culture will always put the group first.

The group in this situation could be really as broad as the whole country itself. So one example might be if the company has a product that will create huge profits for the companies but hurt other companies or maybe pollute the environment, someone from a collectivist culture would not see the value of that profit.
